With the abundance of processed goods and fast food in today’s society, obesity has been on the rise for the last few decades. As more people have gained weight, lifestyles have become hectic and have provided for less and less time to stay focused on maintaining a healthy weight. Even those with good intentions in losing weight fail to do so. In this article, Larry Greenfield, a New York-based fitness trainer, shares five tips to help keep your weight loss on track.

1. Meal Prep

In today’s modern world, the workday is hectically broken up between work, taking care of the kids, and trying to get a workout in. Add in the time to prepare and cook a healthy meal and suddenly you are faced with having to compromise. By carving a slice of time each week, whether it’s a Sunday evening or a Monday, use that dedicated time to prepare multiple healthy meals and snacks for the week. Having the food on hand makes it less likely to cave and grab that drive-thru meal.

2. Set a Clear and Specific Goal

Your goal has to be specific and realistic. Many diets fail because unrealistic expectations are set. It is also important to establish the “why” for your weight loss goal. Is your motivation to lose weight in order to live a healthier lifestyle, fit into that wedding dress, or ensure you have a future with your family? Each person’s reasons are different; therefore, it is crucial to find what your motivation is and stick to it.

3. Speed Bumps are Okay

Your weight loss journey does not have to be perfect. While you want to stick to a regimen and follow it as best as you can, it is okay if something comes up and you can’t follow through. The most important thing is to identify what is good, better, or best. If you aren’t in a position to pick the healthiest food option or get a full workout in, what is your next best option? It does not have to be an all or nothing, simply find the next best alternative. If you aren’t able to fit in an hour at the gym, even 15 or 20 minutes at home can make a significant difference.

4. Get Rid of Unhealthy Options

One of the easiest ways to keep yourself from indulging in unhealthy foods is to not keep them readily accessible in your house. Throw away or hide all of the junk food in your home. Consider replacing it with healthy alternatives. As the phrase says, “out of sight, out of mind”. Replace those processed snacks like chips or crackers with healthy items like nuts or fruit.

5. Find a Partner or Support Network

Making big lifestyle changes can be difficult enough to tackle on your own. Finding a friend, spouse, or coworker to support your journey can help keep you on track. Having someone who cares there to hold you accountable can make sticking to your plans much easier. Support can look like having a workout partner, a friend to send you encouragement messages periodically, or a spouse stepping in to take care of dinner so you can fit in a workout.
